Original title: Maigret et la jeune morte
Late at night, Inspector Maigret was just finishing a long interrogation of a gang of burglars that was operating in the area, when a phone call reported the body of a young woman found in a small square. Despite the weariness after a long day, Maigret decides to drive to the square and have a look. Local detective, Inspector Lognon, was already there, and he did not seem too pleased that the Criminal Division will take over his investigation. The girl looked young, maybe 20 years old, in a cheap and worn-out evening dress, with one shoe missing and most likely killed by a blow to the head. She had no handbag, no any form of identification, no money. Lying dead in a middle of a small and barely frequented square in the middle of the night, she seemed completely out of place. Where was she going so late at night? Or where was she coming from? Why did someone attack her? And, the most important question, who is she?
One of the best Inspector Maigret books, which begins with a completely unknown victim found in the middle of the night and all the standard police procedures to identify her are completely fruitless. It appears that no one in the whole of Paris knew who she was, or no one cared enough to come forward with any information. But bit by bit, the mystery unfolds through seemingly non-important details found in different places and the stubbornness of Inspector Maigret to find out what happened to the young girl. It is one of those detective books, in which not much is actually going on, but still, you just can’t put down the book before you can learn the whole story.
