Original title: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House
Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Jack Whicher is sent to a small village to take over the investigation into the death of a three-year-old Saville Kent, a son of a factory owner. So far, the local police did not make much progress in the case, so the superiors sent Whicher to investigate this murder and find the killer. His initial impression makes him believe that someone from the Kent household is the murderer, which makes his job even more complicated. The father seems to be heartbroken, but keeps his cold exterior, while the stepmother is eerily quiet and the older sister of little Saville behaves suspiciously. Kent is a tough man, who hires many locals, which makes the list of the suspects even longer, there are maids, servants, factory workers...
A true-crime film based on a real-life Scotland Yard detective from the 19th century, Jack Whicher. With a strong cast, a well-written script and using a famous murder case, The Murder at Road Hill House, as the main plot, the film was so successful that later three more episodes were filmed. Unfortunately, they were not based on real cases in which Jack Whicher was involved, but were fully fictionalised accounts of him as a private investigator after he finished his work for Scotland Yard. The cases presented in them were not that interesting, they lacked atmosphere and overall were a waste of potential built by the first film of the series, which was a shame. Still, the first film, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House, is definitely worth watching. The others, not so much, although they do paint a picture of the 19th century society that might have been absent from other productions.
