When human remains are found in a basement of an old residential house during a renovation, DCI Cassie Stuart and her team begin their investigation into a murder case that could be decades old. The first problem they have to face is determination of the time when the body was buried there - is it a archaeological site or a crime scene. When that hurdle is crossed, they have to find out who the victim was. To help with that, any piece of the clothing or any item found close to the body, needs to be thoroughly examined. At this point DCI Stuart and her officers determine that the body belonged to Jimmy Sullivan, a 17-year-old boy, who was reported missing in July 1976. In that period of time, this building was used by the owners to rent the rooms and Jimmy was one of the tenants. His notebook consisted few names and phone numbers of people, who were the tenants and now the policemen will have interview all of them. One is an entrepreneur Sir Phillip Cross, others are Father Robert Greaves, then young woman called Lizzie Wilton - they are now in completely different surroundings, but back in 1976 they were living under a single roof.
Unforgotten was not a very original idea, similar in concept to once popular Waking the Dead, it was kept in rather slow pace and typically classic British style of narration, revealing backstories and secrets of each of the characters involved, so until the end it is all opened to interpretation who and why killed Jimmy Sullivan. But somehow the show keeps the old formula fresh and the interesting. The chemistry between the main characters, the ambiguous way the characters are being presented and revealed to the audience, all of it is the quintessence of what made the British crime literature and tv series so great.
